Your WAC in action…..

The right time, the right place!

It seems that our fledgling Advisory Committee already has a role to play in the shifting dynamic between Teton County Government and the people of Wilson.

CROSSWALK IN DOWNTOWN WILSON – SOON TO BE A REALITY!

Commissioner Jim Darwiche, following up on a suggestion by members of your WAC Advisory Board, has succeeded in getting WYDOT to agree to a crosswalk in downtown Wilson, thereby greatly increasing pedestrian safety. This small step will also break the ice for future pedestrian-friendly improvements, and hopefully signify a subtle but important shift in the old “car vs. pedestrian” debate.

AMENDMENT TO THE COUNTY COMPREHENSIVE PLAN

– Planning Commission will vote again  this Monday, Sept. 8th-

On August 18, the Teton County Planning Commission met to consider amending the Comprehensive Plan in accord with Wilson Advisory’s formal submission earlier this year. Based on the design guidelines which grew out of our Planning Charrette a couple of years ago, this would be a huge step forward in maintaining our local, rural character in the face of inevitable future growth pressures.

About 20 Wilson people showed up at the first hearing in August, mostly to support the amendment, and at least 13 people spoke on the record. Thanks to all who attended - this was a very good turnout. It makes a tremendous difference when the Commission hears from a good cross section of Wilson people

As Acting Chairman for the Steering Committee, Peter Pilafian had signed the Amendment application, which was put together in cooperation with Horton Spencer and Tim Young, acting on behalf of the Advisory Committee Membership at large.

Please take a look at this application on the County web site at:

http://www.tetonwyo.org/plan/docs/StaffReports/2003/AMD2003-0007/AMD2003-0007PCreport.pdf

The Staff Report recommends approval, but the Planning Commissioners voted for continuance until their next meeting on Sept. 8th. See article in the JH News and Guide August 20th issue for details.

WEB SITE

We now have our own fledgling web site at www.wilsonadvisory.org which includes a sign-up page for new members and additional info for existing members. Please visit the site if you have access to the web. Any contributions to this site are more than welcome. If any of you would like to contribute web-design expertise, please call Beth McIntosh at 733-6753, or Peter Pilafian at 733-3617

ALTA ADVISORY COMMITTEE RESOLUTION

Some members of the County Commission have suggested that the WAC become a more formal group appointed by the County, patterned after the Alta Advisory Committee.

What do you, the members,  think about an official, appointed version of the WAC? It might take away the “voice of the people” nature of our little fledgling organization, and make it more bureaucratic and ponderous. On the other hand, it could give us more legitimacy.  Please call or e-mail with your comments and thoughts.

Text Box: ACTION ALERT: On Monday, Sept. 8 th there will be a SECOND meeting of the Planning Commission, to vote on our application for additions to the Comprehensive Plan. Again, we need people to attend, and to speak in favor of this very important first step in maintaining the rural nature of Wilson into the foreseeable future. (6:00 PM Monday at the Commissioners’ chambers, first on the agenda.)

GENERAL INFO

  1. Since the Wilson Advisory Committee’s formation last Fall, both  County and  Town have undergone major changes in leadership philosophy. Our current officials now seem more responsive to the needs of ordinary people, the families and long-term residents who make up the core of our community. That is very good news for the people of Wilson. What specifically does this mean for us?
  2. Well, for one thing, the concepts and planning that were so carefully hammered out during our week-long Wilson Charrette two years ago, are now being favorably considered for inclusion in the Comprehensive Plan, thanks to a filing by your Steering Committee.
  3. The Wilson Sewer situation has become increasingly complex. Not many people know, for example, that the new homes in Wilson Meadows already  feed their sewage uphill to be processed by the Aspens/Pines treatment plant, and are therefore NOT part of the new sewer district.

We would like to hear from our members about this controversial and underfunded project. Send mail to: comments@wilsonadvisory.org
